How CBD Can Help Migraines

The use of CBD for migraines is increasing in popularity as an effective way to treat and prevent the debilitating headaches, but how? We’ve broken it down for you so you can decide for yourself if CBD is the right choice for you.A migraine is categorized as a headache that typically affects on side of the head and if often accompanied by throbbing, nausea, sensitivity to light and sound, and disrupted vision. Migraines tend to be more common in women rather than men and effect about 10% of the world’s population. They can be set off by stress, hormonal changes, insomnia, bright/flashing lights, and even smells.

But how can cannabis help? Cannabis and its extracts have been used to treat headaches for hundreds, if not thousands, of years. That’s because our bodies have its own endocannabinoid system (ECS), which plays an important role in who suffers from migraines.

The ECS is our largest regulatory system. It controls everything from pain to appetite. Our bodies produce its own cannabinoids and we have cannabinoid receptors in almost every cell in our bodies. Anandamide, sometimes referred to as the bliss molecule, is the body’s natural version of THC. A 2007 study discovered that constant migraine sufferers had below average level of anandmite, thus leading researchers to believe migraines are caused by a deficiency in the endocannabinoid system

Another study, conducted in Colorado in 2016, found that the frequency of migraines decreased 50% in patients that had been using cannabis as a means to treat their headaches. Moreover, 12% of all patients that they had observed stated that regular cannabis use stopped their migraines entirely.

This is where CBD comes in. Because migraines might be caused by an ECS deficiency, by supplying your ECS with a daily dose of cannabis makes sense, right?  Thats why so many people are using CBD for migraines. This can be done by diluting CBD in your water or morning coffee, smoking or vaping a strain that is high in CBD concentration.

Even though research on this topic is limited, one study from 2017 showed that cannabis was a more impressive treatment than prescription drugs for migraines and headaches. Participants in the study were given combinations of THC and CBD every day for three months. Not only did they have a 55% decrease in pain, but that pain relief was more effective than their regularly prescribed migraine meds. Moreover, the participants had fewer side effects (such as muscle and stomach pain) that were associated with their prescription medications.

A 2015 survey done in California found that medical marijuana patients and learned that CBD for migraines decreased pain 100% of the time. Yes, 100%.  From a different aspect, they found that CBD helped other ailments an average of 50%.

It is suggested that CBD oil is added to your daily routine for preventative means. Because the CBD oil can help with many daily migraine triggers, like stress, anxiety, and insomnia, this approach is twofold. CBD helps to prevent the triggers as much as a headache.

CBD for migraines has been a game changer for countless people. If you’re looking to recommend CBD to a friend or family member, remind them CBD is not psychoactive and doesn't get you high”. And since CBD is derived from the hemp plant, it can be shipped to all 50 states. Don’t miss out on the healing powers of CBD!
